Past Exhibition: Andiamo/Allons-y: Summer in the Cities of Italy and France by Michelle Boerio

Shadow of the Statue of Neptune, 2023.

Andiamo/Allons-y: Summer in the Cities of Italy and France showcases a series of paintings inspired by observations of the architecture, daily life, and nature in more than a dozen cities across Italy and France. Most of the paintings were created outdoors, on location, and range from watercolor to mixed-media and acrylic mediums.

Exhibited at Wild Goose Creative Gallery November 15 – 29, 2023.

“Most of the works were created en plein air (on site outdoors) while composer, Lauren Spavelko and I lived abroad this summer,” says local artist Michelle Boerio. “The goal was to explore, make art and seek out nature in the urban environment. We started in Paris and Lyon, France, then moved on to Italy, experiencing the cities of Turin, Bologna, Verona, Venice, Rimini, Parma, Florence, Rome, Pompeii, Naples and Positano.”

Boerio’s work is fluid, expressive and confident. She uses watercolor, acrylic and mixed media to capture not just moments of nature in the city, but also the sense of place, from the heat of the day to the historical character of the architecture.

Boerio explains the reason for the show. “These are the remarkable kind of experiences you want to share. There were surprises everywhere. One painting is about an evening when we listened to a classical music trio play in a medieval church courtyard as bats came out to fly overhead. I hope the viewer will get a feel for what it was like to live a normal kind of daily life in a wonderfully different context.”

2023 in Review by Michelle Boerio

2023 was a year of travel, making art, and spending some good time with friends and family.

The Euro Trip So Far by Michelle Boerio

I’m writing now from Bologna, Italy, where my friend Lauren and I are on a two month trip through Europe. We’re here to travel, make art, research, and explore (and eat lots of good food). During this trip, I’ve set myself up with a couple of starting questions for making art: 1) how do plants and animals interact with the human-built environments (some of which are ancient and some very modern) of our destinations, 2) How can I experiment with combining painting, drawing, monoprint, and/or collage to create images inspired by my experiences here.

So far, I’ve run into many, many pigeons, some feral graveyard cats, a fight between starlings and sparrowhawks, giant catfish, swan families, and a horde of turtles. One of the nice parts of traveling through the early summer has also been that so many flowers are in bloom. I spent a decent part of our time in Paris smelling every rose I passed and then chasing down the jasmine and honeysuckle in Lyon and Torino. Green spaces have been a bit fewer and farther between in the city center of Bologna, but I’ve enjoyed watching starlings dart above the Piazzas and finding many, varied lion sculptures throughout the city.

As I travel, I’ll be painting on watercolor and acrylic paper with water soluble paints like watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. I’ve also got some watercolor pencils and a little gelli plate for monoprints. I love oil painting, but I wanted to simplify packing and clean-up as much as possible while we travel. What this means is that I can make quite a few smaller paintings with multiple layers, but certain techniques like wiping out and scraping back will be limited to what the paper can tolerate.

Tiny Art at Wild Goose Creative by Michelle Boerio

Four of my little guys are on view tonight at Wild Goose Creative’s Tiny Art show. It’s a one night only show 6-9pm for this month’s Franklinton Friday. I can’t wait to see everyone’s small works there! (And everything is available for sale, so it’s a great time to take home some mini-art works).

Wild Goose Creative is at 188 McDowell St, Columbus, OH 43215.

Books about art and creativity by Michelle Boerio

Books about art, creativity, and making things.

Books about art, creativity, and making things.

Pictured are some of my current favorite books about art and creativity, both for adults and kids.

  • Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. A new classic, busts popular myths about creativity.

  • Show Your Work also by Austin Kleon. A great follow up to Steal Like an Artist, offers advice for ways to make creating a habit and share your work.

  • The Wander Society by Keri Smith (also the creator of Wreck This Journal, another favorite). This book invites you to join the mysterious Wander Society, explore nature, make stuff, and expand your mind.

  • Hey, Day! by Clea Hantman and Keva Marie. One of my absolute favorite books growing up, it offers a new fun, wacky, or creative activity for every day of the year.

  • Drawing Your Own Path by John F. Simon Jr. This book combines drawing and meditation to help you create your own more mindful practice.

  • Art Workshop for Children by Barbara Rucci and Betsy McKenna. Process orientated art activities for kids that are based in good educational theory!
